Villa Koyama is what Seminyak looked like before Seminyak. A hand-carved timber door opens off a quiet residential gang in Petitenget, and behind it is 850 m² of alang-alang roofed pavilions, fish ponds with fountains, and a garden dense enough that you stop hearing the street.

The five bedrooms are spread across separate garden pavilions rather than stacked in one block, which is the whole point of the place — you get a compound, not a house. Everyone has their own front door, their own veranda, and a semi-open en-suite with an outdoor shower.

The pool is the other reason people book it: 14 metres of free-form water with a shallow step-in at one end, so toddlers have somewhere to stand and adults still get a proper swim. A thatched bale with a daybed sits at the water’s edge — the best seat on the property, and where the massages happen.

It is genuinely central. The shops, spas and restaurants of Petitenget are a walk away, and the beach is about five minutes by car.

The living pavilion sits in the middle of the property, open-sided to the garden and surrounded by ponds. Hardwood floors, antique timber furniture, a high Balinese roof with ceiling fans, and several different places to sit depending on whether you want the breeze or the shade. There is a teak dining table for ten and an open kitchen with a counter bar. A separate media room takes the evening film, so nobody has to be quiet for the people watching it.

The pool is 4 x 14 m, free-form, with a shallow step-in area for small children. Sun loungers and parasols line the lawn beside it, and a thatched bale with a curtained daybed sits right at the water’s edge — good for an afternoon out of the sun, and where in-villa massages are set up.

Four of the five bedrooms have king beds and the fifth has twin singles. Every room is air-conditioned, has a veranda, and a private semi-open en-suite bathroom with an outdoor shower. The master adds a timber floor, a crystal chandelier, full-length glass doors onto the pool, a dressing room and a bathtub in the en-suite.

A team of four looks after the villa daily — housekeeping, gardener and pool.
